Daniel: who needs you04 Jun 2006 03:54
I've been looking the song analysis from this song and i have two questions:
The chord that is used on the verse ,  the E7 or G#haldim or however it's called, how does it work with the harmony?,  i don't find it very dominant kind but how does a half dim chord work against a simple harmony like that one,     and    how does the modulation in the solo to the "chorus" work if no one even set a dominant or there is no clear sign for it

Thanks

G#halfdim contains four notes: G# B D F#. Note that it shares three notes with E7, but I agree with you that it's not very dominant except for the bass.

The ending of the first solo is very resolution-like imo, plus the new key is reinforced by the V>IV>I progression, and the IV>V>I at the end. The change to V-IV is McCartney-esque to my ears, although Paul didn't use it to modulate (or at least not very often).
