Sebastian: Songwriting Trademark List01 Jun 2004 14:57
Hi. The idea here is to collect every example of each band member`s cliches or usual devices. It covers both songwriting and arrangements (and even lyrics as long as they`re treated from a deep point of view, not simple statements as "it has the word `lady` then it`s Brian..."). That can be a good database for my site`s "who wrote what" analyses.

Songwriting trademarks IMO aren't always something predictable. The most predictable
things in (pop/rock) music are the four-square phrasing, the model-like songforms, the cliche chord progressions (most notably the 1-2-4-5, 1-6-4-5, chain of fifths progressions).

There were some interesting short-lived trademarks, like Roger's riffs combining chromatic descent with pedal point (Fun It, More of That Jazz).
The diminished chords (and dissonant chords generally) are not really something "predictable", but Freddie used it definitely much more frequently than Roger (Radi Ga-Ga).
Descending chromatic progression: I would say these are chromatic scale fragments in the harmony.

Pedal bass: Brian trademark.

Predictable--> I didn`t know how to call them, that`s the reason of the quotations. I don`t mean all of them are trademarks since for example John also used those kinds of chords, perhaps more than Fred averagely (although less numerically). But that`s the idea. To find out more similarties and differences and have a kind of data-base with all avaliable examples about it.

Something interesting I found: Brian used to reprise intros without changes (Tie Your Mother Down, Good Company), while Fred put variants (Liar, Was It All Worth It). Of course there are several exceptions on both sides.

Lists I want to work on soon: riffs (which ones are over chord progressions - e.g. Tie Your Mother Down -, which ones are over just one chord - e.g. Masterstroke), modulations, and intros done as instrumental verses (e.g. Hammer To Fall).

Four in a bar staccato chords:

- Bohemian Rhapsody: Opera section (2 measures)
- Death On Two Legs: Intro II (just in right hand, while left plays the motif, 2 measures)
- Great King Rat: Before last verse (it`s a variant though, instead of playing one chord each beat, guitar plays 1/2 and then 2/4, each beat) (2 measures)
- Killer Queen: Before lyrics begin (studio version with clicks, live with piano) (normally 2 measures)
- Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon (live, 2 measures)
- My Fairy King: Before lyrics begin (2 measures)
- Ogre Battle: Before bridge (also a little varied, not technically 4 per bar, but same concept)
- The Millionaire Waltz: Before waltz solo and at the very beginning (improved version of the "cliche", using waltz standard, but again repeating the same four times, 2 measures)
- The Miracle: Before lyrics begin (slightly more evolved, 2 measures)
- Was It All Worth It: At the beginning of the big interlude (just the bass of the chord, played on synth/strings, 1 measure)

--------------

FREDDIE: HARMONIES ARRANGEMENT

--

One part stays plain and the other is constantly ascending:

- Bring Back That Leroy Brown: Voices in "we want leroy for president"
- Don`t Stop Me Now: Voices in "supersonic man out of you" and similar parts
- Killer Queen: Voices in "pa pa pa pa"

--

Multi-part harmonies suddenly fading to very few:

- Bicycle Race: Voices before ring break. From 4/5 part to octave parallel ("race")
- Bohemian Rhapsody: Guitars after the piano scale, from 4/5 part to unison
- Somebody To Love: Voices in the intro, from 5/6 part to (two) parallel octaves

--

Octave Vocals:

- Bicycle Race
- Bohemian Rhapsody
- Flick Of The Wrist
- Somebody To Love
- The Fairy Feller`s Master Stroke
- The March Of The Black Queen

----------------------

FREDDIE: SONG STRUCTURES

--

The (first, in most cases) intro is never repeated later in the song, not even in varied or shortened form. Songs in which the intro is the motiff/riff/hook of the verse or other section don`t count, neither the ones who just stay in one chord (e.g. Life Is Real). Breakthru doesn`t count because it`s two separate songs:

- Bohemian Rhapsody
- Flick Of The Wrist
- Death On Two Legs
- Great King Rat
- In The Lap Of The Gods
- It`s A Beautiful Day
- It`s A Hard Life
- Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon
- Love Of My Life (debatable)
- My Fairy King
- Seaside Rendezvous
- The March Of The Black Queen
- You Take My Breath Away

Exceptions: Rock It (unless they`re originally two different songs), A Kind Of Magic (unless that`s part of Fred`s input, because Brian commented Fred actually wrote some little pieces), Keep Yourself Alive, Dead On Time, It`s Late

Great Sebastian , this makes more easier to know "who wrote that ...." in your website , are you planning to put this on your site?

I mean you can put like a search engine with mysql or something like that.
5.Sebastian 05 Jun 2004 17:47
Yes as a matter of fact I`m thinking of a whole new design for the site in the future.
